It’s interesting that Sleeping Beauty essentially shut down Walt Disney’s fairy tale output for nearly thirty years before The Little Mermaid came along in 1989 to revive the animated genre. While it may not have been a box office superstar or a critical darling upon its release in 1959, it’s clear that the film has gained a significant following (and improved critical standing) over the past few decades.
